Loose Leaf Tea vs Tea Bags

Convenience, flavour and value — how to choose the right format for your routine.

Silver spoons holding different loose-leaf teas

There's no single right answer. Both formats can make an excellent cup — the best choice depends on how, where and how often you drink tea.

What's really different

Traditional tea bags often contain small, broken leaf pieces that infuse quickly and strongly. Loose leaf is usually larger, which lets it unfurl and release flavour more gradually.

Pyramid bags sit in between: they hold larger leaf and give it room to expand.

When tea bags make sense

  • At work or when travelling
  • When you want a quick, consistent strong cup
  • For milky breakfast tea

When loose leaf shines

  • When you want to re-steep the same leaves
  • For delicate whites, oolongs and greens
  • When you'd like to control strength precisely
