You don't need a tasting vocabulary to choose a great tea. Start with flavours you already like in food and drink, and use them as a map.

Six tastes to start with

  • Floral — jasmine greens, first flush Darjeeling, white tea, chamomile.
  • Earthy — pu-erh, rooibos, bold matcha.
  • Fresh — sencha, peppermint, light oolong.
  • Malty — Assam, breakfast blends, autumn Darjeeling.
  • Spiced — masala chai, kahwa-style blends.
  • Citrus — lemon green teas, hibiscus, fruit blends.

Use what you already love

Enjoy dark chocolate or coffee? Try malty or earthy teas. Love fresh herbs and salads? Explore grassy greens. Prefer something sweet and fragrant? Floral whites and jasmine are a good bet.

Taste side by side

Brewing two teas at once is the quickest way to learn. Differences that are hard to describe alone become obvious when compared.
